Basketballer headed for new heights in US By Gordon Findlater TOBY GILLOOLY is the latest Canterbury basketballer to secure a United States college scholarship after a standout secondary school spell with Burnside High School. In 2016, Gillooly averaged 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists per game, while shooting 57 per cent from the field for his school. The 18-year-old will head to New Mexico Highlands University next week to begin a four-year scholarship. Gillooly made the decision to join the university after visiting New Mexico late last year. “The coach was it for me, he seemed like a really enthusiastic and smart coach. I really like where the basketball programme is heading and I feel like I’ll be able to fit in well straight away,” said Gillooly. The 193cm guard is the second Christchurch basketballer in a week to announce he has a college scholarship. Last week, Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Quinn Clinton revealed he will play for the University of New Mexico. Clinton was the standout player in last year’s local secondary school competition, with many viewing Gillooly as the competition’s second most

valuable player. Only 90 minutes on the road will separate the two, with Gillooly based in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Clinton in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“We’re really good mates off the court. We will actually play each other in pre-season and it will be really cool having (Clinton) just down the road,” Gillooly said.

He has been part of the Mainland Eagles Academy for the past two years and played for the Canterbury Rams under coach Mark Dickel in 2016. •Turn to page 6

Work starts at busy intersection to ease traffic congestion WORK IS under way on the $15 million bypass near the Waterloo Business Park to ease traffic congestion in the area. About 24,000 vehicles use the intersection at Main South Rd and Barters Rd each day. A New Zealand Transport Agency spokeswoman said there were 19 injury crashes at the intersection of Main South Rd and Barters Rd between 2011 and 2015. The project, led by NZTA, is intended to ease congestion in the Hornby business area in response to increased traffic from the business park. Waterloo Business Park assistant development manager Joel Webber said it is expected between 3000 and 5000 people will be working at the park when it is completed. The project is expected to take 15 months to complete. Along with the construction of the bypass, stage two of the Christchurch Southern Motorway project has begun to improve congestion problems for motorists commuting between Halswell and Rolleston.

Retired coroner gets new year honour By Georgia O’Connor-Harding TWENTY-ONE YEARS of investigating deaths has led to retired coroner Richard McElrea being recognised on the New Year Honours List. Mr McElrea, 72, of Fendalton, who was instrumental in establishing the Coroners’ Council in 1998, was awarded the Companion of the Queen’s Service Order. He said it was a privilege to work as a coroner, and he was lucky enough to have worked in both the old and the new coroner system which was established in 2007. Born in Dunedin, Mr McElrea attended Otago Boys’ High School before going on to gain a Bachelor of Arts at Otago University and a law degree at Canterbury University. He became a partner at law firm Duncan Cotterill in 1970 before being appointed a coroner for the Canterbury region in 1994. “It wasn’t something I always thought I would go into but it is just an opportunity that arose and I have had the privilege of having two careers in the law,” he said. In 1998, Mr McElrea helped

found and chaired the Coroners’ Council which, he said, was an important part of the coroner support system. “We started having meetings . . . we worked together to try and bring about change which would mean more resources for corners and that all occurred,” he said.

After the establishment, the council began liaising with the Ministry of Justice and other coroners from overseas, setting up a best practice. As well as his services as a coroner, Mr McElrea was recognised for his former role as chair of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, which is responsible for the care

He continued his interest by interviewing survivors from Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctica expedition of 1914-1917 and co-authored a book Polar Castaways. In the mid-1980s as president of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, he became involved in the formation of the Antarctic Heritage Trust which ensures

expedition bases and thousands of artefacts are preserved. “It is as if I have been there yesterday, such are the sharpness of the images one experiences down there,” he said. He was one of four residents from the western area of the city to be honoured on the list. Ms Catherine Samantha Russell, of Riccarton, was recognised for services to health and governance, John Harrington of Burnside, was recognised for services to youth and Emeritus Professor John Frederick Burrows, of Fendalton, for services to the State.

News Crummer looking forward to reunion Annie Crummer found fame with hits such as Language and See What Love Can Do. She spoke to Tom Doudney about working on new material and seeing dyslexia as a blessing, ahead of her performance with Debbie Harwood, Margaret Urlich and Sharon O’Neill at Lincoln’s Selwyn Sounds concert in March IT HAS been a long time since we’ve heard anything new from Annie Crummer but the singer is hopeful her fans won’t have to wait too much longer. Crummer hasn’t released a full album of original material since 1996’s Seventh Wave. Since then fans have had to make do with a best of collection in 2002 and three songs released in 2010 as singles only. While she is reluctant to talk about release dates, she has been working on songs for an album which has a working title of Project Annie C. “I have got a bunch of songs that I am dying to get out of the demo situation and get into the studio and smash that stuff out, I’m the only one stopping me,” she said. “I’ve got a lot more to say musically, I will just have to get over myself and get on with it.” Crummer said that while she was known more as a singer than a songwriter, she had become more confident dabbling in song writing. “Melodies come really good to me but the way I write lyrics is quite odd because I am fully dyslexic so the way I explain things, I don’t think it’s the same as a non-dyslexic song writer.” Crummer only discovered she was dyslexic well into her adult years but the revelation came as a big relief. “When I look back I think: ‘Oh,

I have been blessed with dyslexia, that’s all.’ I just learn things differently,” she said. “I forgave myself for feeling so dumb all these years because I left school really early and now when I look back at all the subjects I took it had nothing to do with anything technical, it all had to do with creative stuff.” Those subjects included classes on art, Maori culture and, perhaps surprisingly, typing – because she could just copy the patterns without thinking about the words. That ability to recognise patterns helped her land a leading role in the Australian version of Ben Elton’s hit musical-theatre production We Will Rock You, based on the songs of British rock band Queen, in 2003. To get the part of Killer Queen, Crummer had to audition in front of Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. “I had to learn the English phonetically and that is actually how I learn music too, I listen to where heart is needed and where anger is needed and all the emotions, I just

emulate those inflections without really knowing what I am talking about, but I have just fooled everyone,” she said. “I can’t believe I got that role, if only they knew how I did it. But it did catch up on me a couple of times on stage where I’d fumble

over a word because I didn’t fully understand it and I had to dig my way out of it, live.” She said that while the way dyslexic people figured things out might be different, the outcome could be incredible. Crummer, who lives in Auckland, said she loved that performing enabled her to travel. She always looked forward to playing with Harwood, Urlich and O’Neill, sometimes joined by Shona Laing, with the singers typically doing about three or four shows together a year. She was looking forward to reuniting with them for Selwyn Sounds. “I’m a huge fan of theirs and we have the utmost respect for each other so it’s a joy all round, a real buzz.” The concert will also feature Kiwi rock heavyweights Mi-Sex, Dragon, The Jordan Luck Band and Jason Kerrison. When she was not perform-

ing with Harwood and co or going solo, she often joined her father’s band, Will Crummer and the Rarotongans, playing songs which mostly sung in Cook Island Maori. Crummer took a more low key role in the band, playing the pahu and putting in some occasional backing vocals. She didn’t mind stepping back from the spotlight and credited her father with setting her on the path to stardom. “He gave me the gift of music,” she said. “I do count my blessings, that’s a daily ritual for me, the fact that I can do music and have never had a job.” •Selwyn Sounds will be held on March 4, from 11.30am8.30pm. Tickets can be purchased via Ticketek and buyers will be able to prepurchase a return bus ride between pick-up points in Christchurch or Rolleston and Lincoln Domain.

Missing war medals still a mystery By Andrew King WELL-KNOWN rugby league identity Bill Whitehead’s war medals are still missing in action. Mr Whitehead, of Bishopdale, approached Star Media about 12 months ago to try and locate his Queen’s Service Medal and Defence Service Medal. But he is yet to hear anything about them. He gave them to a friend, but cannot remember who. They had planned to combine the medals together. The friend noticed the medals sitting on the top of Mr Whitehead’s cabinet, and said they knew “a place that could connect those together.” “I can’t for the life of me remember who it was,” Mr Whitehead said. He said he wanted to hand them on to his “heirs” and is asking anyone who may know something about the medals to get in contact. War historian Alan Polaschek said he does most of the work on medals in Canterbury, but had not seen Mr Whitehead’s medals. His QSM was presented in 1987 and he was awarded his DSM for his army service from 1950-1952. If you can help Mr Whitehead recover his medals, email andrew. king@starmedia.kiwi

Sprintcars set to tear up Ruapuna By Allan Batt THE PITS will be bursting at the seams this weekend when the Racecourse Hotel and Motor Lodge Ruapuna Speedway host the 47th New Zealand Sprintcar Championship. With 35 entries, this will be the biggest turn out of the V8powered sprintcars at any event in the South Island. Hopes are high for a good showing by the local drivers who are now more used to racing longer distance events and bigger fields than in the past. Christchurch hopes will probably rest on the shoulders of sprintcar rookie, Luke Keegan, who is currently leading the prestigious War of the Wings Series which is contested at numerous South Island tracks. Keegan is a three-time winner of the national modified championship and he has looked fast and smooth this summer. Other Christchurch-contracted drivers expected to feature include the current New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix title-holder Matt Honeywell, veteran Ray Baughan, Shaun Ashton, Jackson Lovelady and Ben Gilmore. There will also be strong support for the event from Cromwell and Nelson drivers, including previous South Island champion Jason Scott and former national champion Jamie Duff who con-

tracts to the southern track. The format will see a host of sprintcar races on the programme with the entry list split into six groups. The groups will race each other once, with the top 16 point scorers going to the 25 lap final. An additional four drivers will qualify for the final through a last chance race. American Jonathan Allard, of Chico, California, will defend

his title and will be keen to make up for his last appearance in Christchurch, when a crash in his last heat race caused damage that saw his engine overheat when he was in a strong position during the championship race. Top Auckland drivers Dean Brindle, Jamie Larsen, Jamie McDonald and Daniel Eggleton are all well-known to Ruapuna regulars and know the track

well, while another Aucklandcontracted driver, Matthew Leversedge, will make his first appearance of the season in his home town after campaigning at Western Springs this summer. Leversedge is currently studying in Auckland and has registered some good results at North Island events. Other prominent entries from the far side of the Cook Strait

include former national champion Rodney Wood (Tauranga), former North Island champions Steven Taylor (Wellington) and Skinny Colson (Tauranga) and leading Palmerston North driver Tony Uhlenberg. •Racing will take place on January 13 and 14, and start each night at 6.30pm with the public gates opening at 4.30pm.

Pine bark may support All the benefits of brain function Recent news from Auckland University of Technology has people excited about a pine bark extract called Enzogenol. AUT reported that patients suffering memory loss and other brain problems after a traumatic brain injury recovered better when taking Enzogenol compared to a control group. Enzogenol is not a new product, though. In fact, it was developed at Canterbury University and has been in our health food shops for over 10 years. According to ENZO Nutraceuticals, the company that produces the product, a number of research studies have shown how Enzogenol can help improve brain function and support healthy blood circulation.

The amazing thing is, it is made from the bark of New Zealand Pinus Radiata with an extraction method that uses only purified water. Apparently, the pine bark is full of healthy plant compounds that are naturally part of our diet when we eat fruits and vegetables. Yet, the pine bark is loaded with these natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds and makes a great starting material for this health product. Keen on a chewing a bit of pine bark? Amazing Glazing has been going from strength to strength since it’s inception in 2004. Max Dorfliger who established the business that offers specially run mouldings of Peninsula macrocarpa to secure a second pane of 4mm glass onto existing wooden frames, has recently brought Gunter Dehne into the business. Gunter, a Cabinetmaker by trade and a technology teacher for many years, was keen to be back on the tools and excited to be adding such value to people’s lives. Existing timber joinery is preserved while a home is effectively double‐glazed. All the benefits of double‐glazing like insulation, reduced heating cost and noise reduction are obtained, without the prohibitive cost of complete replacement. The insulation of Amazing Glazing is better than many standard double glazing solutions due to the increased air space between the panes. The dryer conditions during the summer months make this the best time to install Amazing Glazing. Frames can be oiled for a natural wood finish, or painted in the colour of your choice, to blend in with the existing look. The importance of

Aspire

good blood pressure! Canterbury

Blood Pressure is an indicator of cardiovascular as well as overall health. Healthy blood flow is vital for a healthy body as the blood plasma transports nutrients, hormones, metabolic waste, oxygen and CO2 throughout the body. An area in the brain keeps check on blood flow to ensure health of all cells and the organs they make up. If blood flow is reduced the brain will try to normalise blood flow by adjusting the heart strength, frequency (Pulse Rate) as well as the width of blood vessels all via the nervous system. Over a period of time the blood pressure may keep increasing due to the deterioration of blood flow. A higher B/P is not ideal and is considered a major risk factor for strokes, aneurysm, organ failure and heart failure. Even moderate elevation of B/P is considered a major reason for shorter life expectancy. If we can maintain our B/P in the normal range our overall health will be improved. Systolic B/P (The upper figure) is when the heart contracts and pushes blood around the body. Ideally at rest this should be between 100 to 120. The diastolic B/P (The lower figure) is the pressure in the

arteries between beats and ideally at rest this should be between 60 to 70. It has been found in around 90% of cases high blood pressure is caused by an increase in the resistance to blood flow in the blood vessels. It is believed inflammation and stiffness of the blood vessels are major reasons for this increased resistance. Checking our blood pressure on a regular basis allows us to adjust our diet and lifestyle and see the benefits in our B/P readings. Blood Pressure monitors and further information on how to improve your overall health and B/P naturally is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, Phone: 388-5757. We are Always Happy to Help!
